If you've just RSVPd yes to a gel blaster birthday party — or you're planning one — the "what to wear" question comes up fast. Gel balls leave marks on light clothing. The arena is outdoors on uneven grass. The face shield has to fit properly. This guide covers everything: what to wear, what to avoid, what Battle Kidz provides, and a day-of checklist so nobody arrives unprepared.
The Short Version: Wear This, Not That
If you only have two minutes, here's the summary — the detail follows below.
Wear this
- Closed-toe shoes with grip — sneakers or trainers
- Dark or muted colours — black, navy, grey, khaki, camo
- Comfortable active clothing — shorts and a t-shirt, or joggers
- Long sleeves if the weather is mild or if the child prefers extra coverage
- Hair tied back (for medium or long hair) — it needs to fit under the face shield
- Sunscreen applied before you arrive
Don't wear this
- Sandals, flip flops, or any open-toe footwear
- White, cream, or light-coloured clothing
- Loose jewellery or necklaces that interfere with the face shield
- Anything the child would be upset about getting wet or marked
- Stiff or restrictive clothing that limits running and crouching
- Party or formal clothes — save those for after the session
Why Closed-Toe Shoes Are Non-Negotiable
The Battle Kidz arena at Huddle Park is an outdoor setting with natural grass, uneven terrain, tree roots, and wooden bunkers. Sandals and flip flops create a genuine slip and trip hazard on that kind of ground — and they offer zero protection if a gel ball hits an exposed foot at close range.
Sneakers or trainers are the ideal footwear. Something with a grip sole that the child can run and change direction in quickly. They'll get dirty — that's part of the deal. If a child absolutely only has one pair of good shoes, consider the R99 solution: Pep or Mr Price Sports trainers worn specifically for the occasion and retired to "garden shoes" status afterwards.
Pack a spare pair of socks. Dew on morning grass and the general intensity of a 90-minute session means feet often end up wetter than expected. A dry pair of socks for after the game makes a real difference to the post-session celebrations.
The Gel Ball Staining Question — Answered Honestly
This is the question parents ask most: will the gel balls stain my child's clothes?
The honest answer: gel balls are water-based and do not permanently stain most fabrics. They do, however, leave highly visible wet marks and can leave temporary colour marks on light or white fabric. Dark clothing — black, navy, grey, khaki, any dark colour — shows nothing. Light blue or grey shows marks that wash out but are visible during the session. White and cream show everything, and while it washes out, it makes for a messy-looking experience during the game.
Our recommendation: wear clothing you don't mind getting marked for the duration, in the darkest colours available. It also happens to look more tactical — which the kids appreciate.
What Battle Kidz Provides — You Don't Need to Bring Any Equipment
Parents sometimes arrive wondering whether to bring their own protective gear or worry about the equipment. The answer is simple: Battle Kidz provides everything needed for the session.
The only things players need to provide are themselves, appropriate clothing, and closed-toe shoes. No gel ball guns to source, no ammo to purchase, no protective gear to find — it's all there.
Can Kids Wear Costumes or Camo?
Absolutely — and many do. Camo patterns are a popular choice because they look the part in an outdoor tactical setting. Full army gear, themed outfits, and matching team colours all work well. Some birthday groups come in coordinated colours to make team ID easy before the marshal armbands go on.
The one rule: the Battle Kidz face shield must be worn throughout play — it cannot be substituted with a costume mask, balaclava, or non-regulation face covering, as it provides specific ballistic protection. Costume elements worn below the face shield (hats, headbands, face paint before the shield goes on) are fine and add to the atmosphere.
The Day-Of Checklist: What to Pack and Do Before You Arrive
- Closed-toe shoes with grip sole — on feet, not in the bag
- Dark active clothing worn — or packed to change into before the session
- Sunscreen applied before leaving home (SPF 30+ minimum; outdoor afternoon sessions get real sun)
- Water bottle or drink per player — physical sessions require hydration
- Spare socks (optional but appreciated after a grass session)
- Change of shirt for after, if desired — to feel fresh for cake and celebrations
- Food and birthday cake packed if it's a party — Battle Kidz does not provide catering
- Long hair tied back before arrival — it needs to sit comfortably under the face shield
- Loose jewellery removed or left at home — necklaces and dangly earrings interfere with face shields
- Arrive 10–15 minutes before your booked session start time for briefing and gear fitting
A Note on Weather
Battle Kidz sessions run outdoors year-round. For spring and summer sessions (September through March), light clothing is ideal — the Johannesburg climate is warm and physical activity generates heat quickly. For autumn and winter morning sessions, a light layer under the active clothing is recommended as the arena can be cool before midday.
Sessions are not cancelled for mild overcast conditions — the outdoor setting at Huddle Park runs in most weather. If there is a weather concern for a specific booking, the Battle Kidz team will communicate directly.
